Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

At last Friday’s assembly, we reflected on the previous Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21).

In the Gospel, the disciples see a large crowd with very little food and question how they could possibly provide for everyone. Jesus responds, “You give them something to eat.” With just five loaves and two fish, Jesus works through his disciples to ensure that everyone is fed.

This Gospel reminds us that we all have something to give. We can “feed” others not only with food, but through our kindness, patience, encouragement, generosity and care. These everyday actions can have a ripple effect, passing from one person to another and helping God’s love become visible in our Sacred Heart community.

The Gospel tells us that “they all ate and were satisfied.” This invites us to think about what it means to be truly satisfied. Beyond our physical needs, we all have a need to belong, to be seen, to be valued and to experience connection, hope and love.

As we move through this week, we are invited to consider, What gift can I offer to help “feed” those around me?
