Year 3/4 Team News

with Grace,Kayleen, Alison, Hayley, Katherine, Dianna & Christine

Hello Year  3/4 families,

We have had a busy fortnight as we settle into Term 2. The 3/4s are encouraged to start working at home on their oral presentations ready to present to their classes in the coming weeks.

This fortnight all year levels will be learning about National Reconciliation Week and celebrating the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Curriculum Focus: Term 2 - Weeks 5 and 6

Literacy: In Reading, we will continue reading our class novel ‘Nim’s Island’. Students will continue exploring the features of non-fiction texts and continue looking at the features of online texts as well.

This term we have introduced ‘fluency paired reading’ where the children read the same text three times a week for a minute. Reading to a partner they note what word they get to in the minute and give each other feedback on their tone and fluency and ability to use punctuation to enhance their expression.

In Writing, we are learning about narrative texts and their structures. Students will be provided with a plot scaffold to use and work on drafting and publishing a narrative piece over three weeks.

Numeracy:  During our multiplication unit, students will learn to

understand multiplication as repeated addition, master basic multiplication facts, develop multiplicative thinking and solve worded problems.  Grade 3s are working on multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10 and Grade 4s up to 10 x 10, extending and applying facts to develop related division facts.

Inquiry: Our inquiry question in Term Two is ‘How can we care for our health and wellbeing?’. Students will examine the benefits of regular physical activity, including the influence on sleep, concentration and wellbeing, and identifying opportunities when they can be active at school, home and in the community. They will also investigate and apply strategies that contribute to their own and others’ health, safety, relationships and wellbeing.

Willy Kids: Term Two’s topic is ‘Willy Kids are Respectful’. Willy Kids are always respectful and think about others. We are exploring how we can show respect in a range of ways.

Respectful Relationships: In Term Two, students are looking at personal and cultural strengths. Students will describe personal and cultural strengths and identify some personal and cultural strengths they can use to respond to challenges and opportunities. They will also describe factors that contribute to  positive relationships with people at  school, at home and in the community.

Homework

Homework is a valuable tool in reinforcing what is being learnt at school. We want our students to think of homework as being an important activity that assists in preparation for life-long learning. All students will receive their homework at school on a Monday and it is due back at school on Friday of the same week.

Homework tasks include:

  • Reading – four nights per week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Students are to record the book titles for the week on the homework sheet.
  • Maths – playing the number games learnt in class at home to continue building number sense and revising learnt skills.
  • Spelling – suggested activities to help practise the words that your child has chosen.
  • Writing – a short writing task to be completed in your child’s Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book in which they are encouraged to complete their tasks. Please contact your child’s teacher if there are any concerns or questions about the homework tasks.
