Year One Team News

with Steph and Emma

Hello Year One families,

Our term has gotten off to a flying start with our visit to Animal Land last week. I am sure you have heard all about the exciting activities we got up to including milking a cow, riding a pony, feeding a range of animals, cuddling bunnies and guinea pigs, and cleaning up horse poop! The teachers were incredibly proud of the behaviour of our Willy Kids who showed great responsibility and listening all day. A big special thank you to the parent helpers that made this possible. Thank you, Phoebe, Jodie and Kye!! We are in the process of selecting pictures to become display items in our classrooms so that students can reminisce about what a great day it was.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 5 - 6

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.2 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Our focus for week 6 will be the phoneme /air/ represented by the grapheme ‘air’. During week 6 we will be revising what we have learnt so far this year.

Writing: Our focus for the next two weeks will be drafting and publishing our information reports on animals.

Numeracy: We will be learning about location and giving and following directions to familiar places. During week 6 we will be focusing on time and measurement.

Inquiry Our inquiry focus on animals will be integrated with the information reports we are reading and publishing.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships Our Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Sociable”. During respectful relationships students will be focusing on understanding their personal strengths.

Take Home Readers

Over the next few weeks, our Year 1 students will participate in some individual learning assessments. These help us celebrate your child's progress and target our teaching for the rest of the year. To give each child our full attention during these sessions, our regular morning reading groups will look a little different. While we conduct these one-on-one assessments, students will engage in independent literacy activities and partner reading. This may mean that your child will come home with previously seen decodable books, or books borrowed from their classroom library. Please continue reading together daily at home as this is vital to consolidating their skills.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Steph Keswick (1K) & Emma Chang-Kum (1C)
