Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Georgia & Claire

Hello Prep families,

The Preps have well and truly settled back into school now that we are in Week Four.  It has been a great fortnight, particularly as we celebrated the special people in our lives for our Mother’s Day afternoon last Friday.

With the recent change in temperature, we have noticed an increase in illness and colds. We ask that if your child is unwell to please keep them home until they are better. This helps to keep other students and staff well. Thank you for your support.

Wicked Weather Incursion

Next Wednesday, the Preps are taking part in our Wicked Weather Incursion, as part of our inquiry unit. Students will participate in a range of experiments to learn about different weather conditions.  Please ensure you have provided permission and payment via Compass prior to next Wednesday.

Mother’s Day Afternoon

On Friday afternoon (8th of May), all the Prep classrooms were filled with love and laughter as we welcomed in so many special people and mums. It was lovely to see the students be so brave and sing the song they had diligently practised with pride. Moreover, it was wonderful to hear the conversations being had about what the students loved to do with their mums and special people. Thank you so much to everyone who attended and made the afternoon so memorable for the students.

In case you were looking for some future ‘performances’ of the adorable Mother’s Day song, we have typed the lyrics below for you.

“We love mothers. We love mothers.

Yes we do. Yes we do.

Mothers are for hugging. Mothers are for kissing.

We love you. Yes we do.”

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 - 4

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read. They will also discuss text features such as full stops and capital letters. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /l/ and /v/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Leo the lion and Vicky the vulture. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Leo Lion - Spotify

Vicky Vulture - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to correctly form letters and use our sound knowledge to write sentences. This week we are focusing on forming the letters ‘l’ and ‘v’. We are also learning to read and write the heart words ‘she’, ‘he’, ‘we’, ‘to’, ‘do’ and ‘was’ this term.

Numeracy - Students are exploring the numbers 11-20. We are looking at making these numbers, matching the numerals to the quantities, comparing the size and recognising these numbers in varied arrangements. This week we started learning how to break a whole number into two smaller parts (early addition).

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is ‘What is changing around us?’.  Our discussions so far have focused on: changes we can observe that take place over a long period of time, changes we can observe that take place over a short period of time, changes we can see in our school environment, and how weather changes affect our lives.

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.
