Maths in the Real World: Decimals and Problem Solving
In S3 this week, students have been learning to solve real-world problems involving decimals and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Students have been applying their mathematical thinking to interpret problems, select appropriate strategies, show their working and explain their reasoning. They have been developing their ability to use maths in practical situations, making connections between classroom learning and everyday contexts.
Family Maths Challenge:
A family is planning a picnic. They buy 4.5 kg of fruit at $3.80 per kilogram and 2.5 kg of snacks at $6.40 per kilogram. They pay with a $50 note. How much change will they receive?
Challenge: Show your working and explain the strategies you used to solve the problem.
