Grade 5 News

What a week we’ve had, delving deep into our inquiry unit! The Grade 5s have continued to explore the question, ‘Why is cultural preservation important for Indigenous communities?’ Through rich mentor texts such as ‘Say yes’ and Cathy Freeman’s ‘Born to Run’, students have described how history has affected Indigenous cultures. Information has been gathered from a variety of sources and meaningful discussions have permeated each of the classrooms to consider different viewpoints and perspectives.

Our teams have analysed a range of Indigenous Australian biographies and have been overwhelmed with the obstacles overcome and the sheer determination of the individuals featured.

Here are some of our responses to Cathy Freeman’s ‘Born to Run’:

Tina - ‘I was shocked by the fact that it was actually written by Cathy Freeman and how she used her time to achieve amazing things.’

Milla – ‘I liked how the book showed the emotions through the words that were written. It made me understand the text more so I knew how she was feeling at that time.’

Divyam – ‘It’s never time to give up, you have to keep on trying!’

So what’s our next step? Choose a famous person to create our own amazing biographies of course!
