SPORT UPDATE

First of all, congratulations to all our athletes who have taken part in sport throughout the year – We are very proud of the participation levels we have developed at this school with sport been ingrained in our culture and this is leading to some great results which will be the theme of this entry.
SPD Lawn Bowls –
We have really strong interest in our lawn bowls competitions across year levels and this year we had three teams compete against the other schools in our district at Mornington bowls club on Monday October 20th. Making amends for last year's second – we had a first place with the triples of Adam D, Taj B and Kaelan W. Thanks to Mr Railton who always offers to take the boys out for a great day.
Regional Table Tennis –
For the second year in a row our year 9 girls represented the school at the regional table tennis championships at the Victorian table tennis association in Dandenong. This years effort was an improvement on last year despite all the girls been in year 9, the bottom year of the intermediate age group. Winning two games and losing one – just missing out on the final, we were super competitive as always. Congratulations our table tennis crew – Georgie G, Maddi S, Ava M and Emily A, looking forward to going again next year!
Regional Futsal -
For the first time in SSV history our district was the driving force behind developing a regional futsal tournament. Futsal is not an SSV affiliated/sponsored sport therefore there is no next level after district but due to popular demand we finally got to represent the school at a regional tournament which was exciting because it’s something we have generally performed well in leading our district in results. Both our year 8 teams played the day out with our boys finishing 3rd (missed second on goal difference) and our girls finishing 4th which is a huge achievement up against some incredibly gifted athletes. Well done to both teams, given your application, performance and exemplary behaviour we hope this can be the catalyst for Futsal featuring at the higher level every year.
Regional Athletics –
Another huge day on the calendar is Regional athletics. Our team has done training over the course of term 3 in preparation for the day, and it certainly showed. Well done to the following students who all competed well on the day:
Lily A: U/16’s Javelin
Lara J: U/14’s Discus (Would have placed if it wasn’t for three no throws!) and U/14’s Javelin
Pheobe G – 12/13 Discus
Tom S: 12-13 High Jump
Elliot M: U/14 200m & 400m (Competed a day after a suspected fractured wrist)
Leo A: U/14 1500m
A special mention to Indi R who placed third in Long Jump – it was a testament to your training here every Wednesday lunchtime for the duration of term 3 in the lead up to the event. To give you some idea of how high the competition is at regional events, when I was watching Lily in her Javelin event I was (politely) told to move out of the way of another students coach who was filming and giving feedback on her technique. The competition at this level is extremely high and the school community is very proud of all of you for your efforts and successes, I hope there is much more to come in the future. Many of you are repeat competitors at this level and your experience really shines – this gives our younger athletes something to strive for so well done to everyone.
