UPSTANDERS AT MESC - Addressing Racism

At Mount Eliza Secondary College, we recognise that racism—whether overt or subtle—can impact individuals and our community as a whole. As a school, we are committed to creating an environment where every student, staff member, and family feels valued, respected, and safe. We continue to reflect on our practices and take active steps to address racism through education, open dialogue, and inclusive initiatives that celebrate diversity. This important work cannot be done by the school alone; it requires the support and shared responsibility of our entire school and wider community. Together, we can build a culture of understanding, respect, and equity where everyone can thrive.

Across Term 3 and 4, students in Years 8-10 have been fortunate to hear from guest speaker Eric Agyeman Home - Eric Agyeman. Whilst Eric talks about his own personal journey, his presentation has allowed opportunities for continued discussion and reflection with students about how they can be upstanders and call out racism. Eric is also running further workshops with a number of students to develop their leadership capacity in this space.

Embedded in our own programs and curriculum are further opportunities to bring this issue to light, for example:

  • Year 8 English students are looking at persuasive language techniques and discuss the impact that language can have when connected to racism.
  • Through our Health classes, students discuss and role play scenarios that explore respectful relationships.
  • Noble Path wellbeing programs allow space for students to openly discuss their own perspectives and build knowledge on calling out negative behaviours with peers.

This work is ongoing, in line with Department of Education policies and values, with the priority of creating a safe and inclusive environment. Our coordination team and wellbeing teams are here to support our students too.
