Reading
This week in Reading, Year 3 students focused on inferring using clues from the text and their own background knowledge to work out ideas that the author does not state directly. They discussed how good readers ‘read between the lines’ by thinking carefully about characters' actions, feelings and events in a story.
Students practised making and explaining their inferences using evidence from the text to support their thinking. This helped strengthen their comprehension skills and encouraged them to think more deeply about what they were reading.
Writing
In Writing this week, students explored the root word 'tain', meaning 'keep', to help build their vocabulary and understanding of word meanings. They investigated words such as contain, maintain, retain and entertain, discussing how the root word helps us understand the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Students also began learning about recounts, identifying their purpose, structure and key language features. They explored how recounts retell events in chronological order using time connectives and past tense verbs, preparing them to write their own engaging recounts.
Maths
In Mathematics this week, Year 3 students began their unit on measurement, with a focus on measuring length. They explored the relationships between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, discussing when it is most appropriate to use each unit of measurement.
Students practised estimating and measuring the length of a variety of objects using appropriate measuring tools. They also converted between different units of length and solved real-world measurement problems, developing their confidence and accuracy when working with metric units.
Inquiry
In Inquiry this week, Year 3 students began their new unit on living and non-living things. They explored the characteristics of living things, discussing how all living organisms grow, reproduce, respond to their environment and require food, water and air to survive. Students compared these features with non-living things, identifying the key differences between the two.
Through class discussions, students practised classifying a variety of objects as living or non-living, using scientific reasoning to justify their decisions. This provided a strong foundation for the learning they will continue throughout the term.
