Reading
In the final week of Term 2, students explored the features of non-fiction texts. They identified common text features, such as headings, photographs, captions and diagrams, and discussed how these features help readers locate and understand information.
Students have begun Term 3 by focusing on summarising fiction texts. They have learnt to identify the key parts of a story, including the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end, to help them retell and better understand what they have read.
Writing
In Writing during week 1 of term 3, students reflected on their school holiday experiences by writing a holiday recount, focusing on writing events in the correct order. During Grammar, students learnt how to form the past tense of regular verbs by adding -ed. In Handwriting, they practised correct letter formation and used dotted thirds to improve the size and placement of their letters. Students also began exploring the features of persuasive texts, learning how authors use opinions and reasons to persuade their readers.

Maths
Students have been learning division and what dividing means. They have been sharing counters into equal groups to identify how a number can be shared. Students have learnt that they need to start with the biggest number and share the counters equally between groups. They now understand that equal groups mean the same number in each group and have been exploring if a number is divisible by another number through trial and error.

Inquiry
In Inquiry during week 1, students explored the difference between needs and wants. They discussed the basic needs that all humans require to survive, such as food, water, shelter and clothing, and compared these with wants, which are things that make life more enjoyable but are not essential. Through class discussions and activities, students learnt to identify and explain why humans have needs and wants and developed a better understanding of the importance of meeting their basic needs.

Social and Emotional Learning
In the final week of Term 2, Year 2 students completed their Help Seeking unit by participating in a cooperative game that encouraged them to help and support one another. This provided an opportunity to discuss how friends can assist each other and the importance of seeking help when needed. As part of our SWPBS lessons, students also explored the difference between telling someone to keep someone safe and dobbing to get someone into trouble. At the beginning of Term 3, Year 2 students revisited the CPS school values and classroom routines before beginning their new unit on Gender Norms and Stereotypes, where they will learn about fairness, inclusion and challenging stereotypes.
AUSLAN
This week in AUSLAN, students have been learning the different signs related to camping. They have been practising the signs for tent, stars, sleeping bag, torch and backpack. Students also played a game of ‘Simon Says’ to practise the different signs.

Creek Walk
As part of our Term 2 Inquiry Unit, Our Amazing Earth, Year 2 students participated in a local creek walk along Malcolm Creek. During this experience, students observed and recorded changes in the environment, including how weather and seasonal changes affected the natural world and our everyday lives. Students recorded information through observations, helping them develop an understanding of the natural processes that shaped Craigieburn.
