Science Technology Engineering and Maths 

Foundation/1: 

Our Foundation and Year 1 students have begun developing their digital technology skills by learning the basics of using computers while also continuing to explore Scratch. Students are becoming familiar with using a mouse, keyboard and trackpad, navigating digital devices safely, and creating simple programs using block coding. They are learning how to use different hand gestures to navigate around the computer. Students are building confidence with technology while developing problem-solving, sequencing and computational thinking skills.

Year 2:

Year 2 students have been exploring the important issue of plastic pollution and its impact on our waterways. They have investigated how plastic waste enters rivers and oceans, the effects it has on wildlife and the environment, and why protecting our waterways is so important. Students have also been identifying examples of plastic pollution around our school and beginning to design creative solutions that could help prevent rubbish from reaching our waterways. 

Year 3:

Year 3 students have been investigating heat energy and discovering that heat is a form of energy found all around us. They have explored common heat sources, including the Sun, electricity, movement and combustion, while making predictions, recording observations and classifying different types of heat sources. Through investigations, students are developing their scientific inquiry skills and building an understanding of how heat energy is produced and used in everyday life. 

Year 4:

Year 4 students have been exploring how forces affect movement by investigating transport systems and the role of friction. They have learned how wheels and axles help objects move and tested how different surfaces create more or less friction. Using their knowledge of forces, students have begun designing and testing transport prototypes while developing their engineering and problem-solving skills. 

Year 5:

Year 5 students have begun their investigation into light energy by exploring how light travels and allows us to see the world around us. They have investigated different sources of light, how shadows are formed, and how materials can be classified as transparent, translucent or opaque. Through scientific investigations, students are making predictions, recording observations and developing a deeper understanding of how light interacts with different materials. 

Year 6:

Year 6 students have started exploring their digital footprint and how their actions online create lasting records. They have investigated the different types of information collected by websites and apps, including personal, location, health and biometric data, and discussed how this information contributes to their digital identity. Students are also learning practical strategies to protect their privacy and become safe, responsible and informed digital citizens.
