Grade 5/6 Semester Wrap-Up

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3! We have certainly hit the ground running, and it has been wonderful to see how settled and engaged the students have been. Our classroom is operating in a real flow state, with students feeling confident in our learning routines and spaces.

I have been particularly impressed by the focus each student has shown towards achieving their personal learning goals. Every day I see our students demonstrating our school values of Grit, Responsibility and Respect, and they should be commended for the positive way they approach their learning and support one another. I feel incredibly privileged to teach such a wonderful group of young people and could not be prouder of the way they have begun the term.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to meet or speak with me during our Parent-Teacher Interviews. I genuinely value the opportunity to work in partnership with families and to celebrate each student's learning journey.

Integrated Studies – The Mystery of the Golden Beaker

This term, students have become forensic scientists in our integrated Science unit.

The school's prized Golden Beaker has mysteriously disappeared from the science laboratory, and it is up to our investigators to solve the case! Throughout the term, students will gather evidence, conduct experiments and analyse clues as they learn key Chemical Sciences concepts.

Rather than simply learning about science, students will apply their knowledge through authentic investigations involving states of matter, mixtures, solubility, separating techniques, and reversible and irreversible changes. Along the way, they will develop important scientific inquiry skills including making predictions, conducting fair tests, analysing results, communicating findings and using evidence to support their conclusions.

We are all looking forward to discovering who stole the Golden Beaker!

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, students are developing a deep understanding of fractions. They will explore equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions, simplify fractions, and apply their understanding through problem-solving tasks. Our lessons continue to focus on explicit teaching, daily review and plenty of opportunities for students to practise and apply their learning.

Literacy – Waves

Our mentor text this term is Waves, a beautifully written picture story that explores themes of migration, belonging, courage and hope.

Students will use the text to strengthen their reading comprehension through rich discussions, vocabulary development, inference and author's purpose. It will also inspire students' writing as they learn to craft engaging narratives, develop characters and communicate emotion through carefully chosen language.

Bush Play

Over the past few weeks, our Bush Play sessions have focused on Bush Theatre, where the natural environment has become both the stage and the inspiration for learning.

Working collaboratively, students have created and performed original plays that combine literacy, drama, creativity and oral language. Through these experiences, students have developed their confidence, teamwork, communication skills and creative thinking while engaging with the outdoors in meaningful ways.

It has been wonderful to see students embrace the environment around them and use their imagination to bring their stories to life.
