Symbols of God: Manna
Feeding the Israelites in the Wilderness
After God delivered the Israelites through the Red Sea, their journey was far from over. Ahead of them lay the wilderness - a vast, dry, and unfamiliar place. It wasn't long before the people grew hungry and afraid, wondering how they would survive. In their fear, they even grumbled against Moses, longing for the food they'd had back in Egypt, forgetting for a moment that God had already proven He could deliver them.
But God did not abandon His people in their need. In Exodus, we read that He provided manna - a fine, flake-like bread that appeared on the ground each morning with the dew. Alongside this, He also provided water from the rock at Massah and Meribah (Exodus 17), meeting the Israelites' most basic needs in the middle of a barren wilderness where survival seemed impossible.
What is remarkable about the manna is how it reveals God's character. Each family was to gather only what they needed for that day - no more, no less. If anyone tried to hoard extra, it spoiled overnight. This daily provision taught the Israelites to trust God one day at a time, rather than relying on their own stockpiles or control. It was a lesson in dependence that God's care is not a one-off event, but something renewed and faithful every single day.
Water in the wilderness carried the same message. When the people had nothing left to sustain them, God brought life out of solid rock, showing that even in the driest, most hopeless places, He can provide exactly what is needed.
These stories remind us that God is not distant or forgetful. He sees our needs, even the everyday ones, and He provides, often in surprising ways. Just as the Israelites had to trust God daily for their bread and water, we too are invited to bring our needs to Him each day, trusting that He is faithful to provide, even when we cannot yet see how.
As we face new challenges and learning, may we be reminded that God cares about the details of our everyday lives, and that His provision is renewed for us morning by morning.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who provides for our needs, even in the wilderness moments of life. Help us to trust You each day, just as the Israelites learned to trust You for their daily bread and water. Teach our school community to lean on You, knowing that Your care for us never runs dry. Amen.
Blessings!
