Author Pen Pals
All students will be taking part in the ‘Author Pen Pal’ program this year (https://www.authorpenpals.com/). It is a fantastic initiative that helps to engage students with literacy by connecting them with authors and/or illustrators across Australia who share their love of literature and tips for writing and drawing through old fashioned snail mail!
This year, one author/illustrator has been connected to each cohort. They are:
Foundation – Claire Peters
Grade 1 – Julie Murphy
Grade 2 – Pip Marney
Grade 3/4 – Ky Garvey
Grade 5/6 – Meredith Downes
Students will be introduced to their author/illustrator via their introductory letter this week. Letters arrive and are sent approximately once a Term. The library planning of lessons involves the content of letters received.
We hope your student/s shares information about their pen pal, and we encourage you to ask them questions about the program. All letters (received and sent) are read by Mrs. Fidock to assure they are suitable. The students are taught/reminded to converse in their reply letter, e.g. answer and ask questions, and to not include personal information, such as full name, address, or telephone number.
If you would like further information, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Fidock.
VPRC
Students in Grade 2 – Grade 5/6 have been registered to take part in the annual Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge (VPRC) as part of their library lessons. The Premiers’ challenge is to read a total of 15 books, with 10 or more of those books from the Challenge book list, by September 6th. Students will be introduced to the Challenge and begin recording their reading progress at the beginning of Term 2.
VPRC began in 2005 to promote reading for both pleasure and literacy development. You can read the Premier’s 2026 opening message and challenge here: Premier’s opening message 2026 | vic.gov.au . Students will be rewarded with a signed certificate from the Premier is they succeed in completing the challenge.
