Prep to Grade 2:

Prep
Sincere Thanks
We are so grateful to Mrs Chen and Mr Siva who will be finishing their placements at the end of Term 1. They are both to be commended for their enthusiasm and dedication. We wish them all the best for the future and look forward to hearing about the next steps in their careers.
Prep Literacy and Numeracy
Our Prep students have been enthusiastically continuing their journey with Little Learners Love Literacy, building strong foundations in reading and writing.
Throughout the term, students have explored a variety of mentor texts, which have inspired their fine motor rotations and supported their developing writing skills. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and confidence grow as they engage with these activities.
In Mathematics, students have enjoyed learning about numbers 1–10 and exploring the concept of “friends of 10.” They are developing a solid understanding of number relationships through hands-on and engaging experiences.
Looking ahead, we are excited to begin sending home take-home books next term to further support reading practice at home.
Over the upcoming holidays, we strongly encourage families to visit your local library. Listening to stories and sharing books together is a valuable way to support your child’s literacy development. Students are invited to record the books that have been read to them for the Premier's Reading Challenge.
Students are also very welcome to continue using Reading Eggs at home, where they can work through lessons and earn certificate rewards for their efforts.
Grade 1/2A:
What a fantastic first term that we've had. Grade 1s have been adding more long vowel spellings to their repertoire including -- y (making ee at the end of a two syllable word), igh, ie, -y, and oa. This week, students have been learning about suffixes and the doubling rule for adding -ing.
Grade 2s have continued to build up their text comprehension skills. They're also continually adding vocab with their words of the week. This week's words were gigantic, commence, decipher, and clutch... can your grade 2 put these words into sentences?
For Writing, students planned, drafted, edited and wrote a good copy of their story based around friendship after exploring the mentor text Two Mates.
Students have also loved getting to practice typing as they added their narratives to google classroom.
In Maths, students finished up our place value unit, and have moved into additive thinking. With a range of knowledge and skills in the room, we have been working on all different strategies from counting all and counting on, to bridging through tens on number lines and as a support for mental addition and subtraction.
Science Incursion
We had an incursion from Victorian school gardens called Gardening for Insects – We looked into good insects and not so great insects. Some insects we love in our gardens, while others are not so welcome. Companion planting in the garden was discussed and how it can help bring in good insects and repel the not-so-great ones. Then the students planted some plants in the school garden that will bring in some good insects.
