Vocational Education and Training in the VCE and VCE-VM
At St Peter’s College, we believe every student’s senior secondary pathway should reflect their strengths, interests and aspirations. Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an important part of this vision, allowing students to combine their VCE and VCE-VM studies with practical, industry-connected learning that prepares them for further study, training and employment.
VET is not an alternative to academic success. It is a valuable and recognised component of the VCE. Students gain nationally recognised qualifications, develop workplace skills and explore future career directions while continuing their broader senior secondary education.
What VET Offers Our Students
VET programs provide hands-on, industry-specific learning. Students develop technical knowledge and practical skills, while also strengthening transferable capabilities such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, safety awareness, initiative and professionalism.
For many students, VET makes learning more engaging because it connects classroom theory with real-world contexts. It helps students see how their interests can lead to apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE study, university pathways or direct employment.
VET Subjects at St Peter’s College
We are proud to offer students access to a diverse range of VET programs, including; but not limited to:
VET Music Performance, developing instrumental / vocal, ensemble, rehearsal and live-performance skills for students interested in the creative industries.
VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation, building knowledge and practical skills in sport, fitness, recreation, leadership and aquatic environments.
VET Hospitality (Cookery), providing hands-on experience in food preparation, kitchen operations, food safety and customer service.
VET Building and Construction, introducing students to construction skills, tools, safety practices, planning and trade-related pathways.
These programs are delivered in partnership with approved Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and meet the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Students receive recognition for completed units of competency, whether they complete a full qualification or part of one.
VET and the ATAR
Many VET studies can be undertaken as scored VCE VET studies. This means students may receive a study score, which can contribute to their ATAR as one of their primary studies or as a fifth or sixth study increment.
This is an important point for students and families: choosing VET does not mean choosing away from a strong VCE or university pathway. A well-planned program can include VET alongside other VCE subjects, allowing students to pursue a practical interest while keeping multiple post-school options open.
A Pathway for Every Learner
VET reflects our commitment to providing diverse and meaningful learning opportunities for all students. Whether a student is passionate about music, sport, hospitality, construction or another industry, VET can provide purpose, direction and confidence.
We encourage students and families to speak with our VET teachers and Coaches, Careers and Pathways Advisors, House Leaders and/or the Curriculum Team when considering VET as part of a VCE program. Careful subject selection ensures that each student’s pathway is both personally rewarding and academically sound.
