Secondary Swimming

Swimming has begun for a committed group of Year 7-10 students.  On Friday 2 August, they attended trials at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre with swimmers from St Mary’s College, St Virgil’s College, Dominic College and Guilford Young College to gather race times in 50m events. Last week, morning training commenced at Clarence Aquatic Centre. This continues on Tuesday and Friday mornings for six weeks in preparation for the SSATIS Swimming Carnival on Thursday 29 August and SATIS Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 18 September. Year 9/10 Football

The Year 9/10 Football team are in full swing in their Term 3 roster. The opening game was a scramble to find enough players, due to so many players being away or sick.  Thanks to Year 10 students Sophia Bowman-Shaw, Ella Woodruff and Katie Sluis, who joined the team last minute to ensure the game could go ahead against St Mary’s College. Whilst the result didn’t go our way, the team spirit and enjoyment were well worth the effort.

Last week’s match against Collegiate saw the majority of the team available, and a much closer contest. The teams battled hard, with Mount Carmel down by just 1 point at the final change. Collegiate kicked strong in the final quarter to win by 2 goals. The roster has Mount Carmel with a well planned bye this week, while Year 10 students are on camp.  Good luck to the team in the remaining games.

Hockey

This term, Mount Carmel has teams participating in Hockey Tasmania’s School Super Sixes Primary competition and the Secondary Division 3 (Year 7/8) competitions. The Super Sixes includes keen students continuing on from Term 2 grass hockey, ready to challenge themselves on the astro-turf against some different opposition. The team played their first game last week against Sacred Heart, in an excellent display of strong defence. The players adapted really well to the faster astro-turf, and will no doubt see their skills improve as a result.

The Division 3 Secondary Hockey team won their opening game last Thursday against Friends Blue 7-0 in a blistering display.  Coach, Dr Whiley was very impressed with the contribution of the whole team, which is has a blend of experience. The team was particularly excited to see Abbie Turner score her first goal.

Good luck to both Hockey teams for the season ahead.

SSATIS Representative Sport

A new SATIS Intrastate Tournament will be held on Friday 6 September at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. This will see SSATIS go up against NSATIS in Girls and Boys Basketball and Soccer.

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Eva Schulze (Basketball), and Year 9 students, Addison Broadbent and Ines Gadon (Soccer), who have been selected to represent Southern SATIS at this event.  As teams comprise students up to Year 12, it is wonderful to see these students selected.  We wish Eva, Addison and Ines and their teams all the best for the tournament.
