Book Week 2024

Julia O’Rourke

Book Week will be celebrated across Australia from 17 - 23 August. Sponsored by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy, adventure, comfort and delight that books bring to our lives. The theme for this year is “Reading is Magic.”

A range of activities to celebrate Book Week have been planned by our Curriculum Leaders, including:

  • a colouring competition for Primary students,
  • book readings for Early Years students conducted by Child Studies and VET Childcare students,
  • the Great Book Swap,
  • a book themed choose-your-own adventure treasure hunt for Secondary students,
  • a Book Week assembly for Secondary students, and,
  • the annual Book week Parade for Primary students.

Great Book Swap

During Book Week, we are excited to participate in the Great Book Swap to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Students can support the Great Book Swap by donating loved and well cared-for, but no-longer-wanted books, dropped off at the Library before Book Week. During Book Week, students will have an opportunity to visit the Library at a designated time to pick up a book of their choice for a gold coin donation.

Book Week Dress Ups

Secondary - Thursday 22 August

All students are invited to "Dress as the main character in their own story". Whether they see themselves as a princess, a mad scientist or a dystopian warrior, this is their opportunity to be who they want to be for a day. Or they could dress as their most authentic self and come in a favourite outfit that represents them best.

Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation which will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. You can bring your donation to school on the day or donate via the Qkr app. The Foundation aims to invest in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, providing the tools and resources they need to shape the direction of their children's literacy future.

Students are reminded to consider what lessons they will participate in on Thursday 22 August, and ensure they have appropriate and safe dress that enables full participation in classes. Sports uniform is required for HPE lessons. If students choose not to dress up, they can wear their sports uniform for the day.

Primary - Friday 23 August

Our annual Book Week Parade for ELC - Year 6 students will be held on Friday 23 August.

All students are invited to dress up as their favourite character and bring the book whose character they are representing.  The parade is a highlight of the week, where students and staff dress up as their favourite book characters, showcasing their creativity and passion for reading.

We encourage you to come and support your children as they participate in this fun and festive event.  Feel free to dress up as your favourite book character as well – the more, the merrier! Your presence will make the day even more special for the students, and it's a great way to be involved in their educational journey.

It is important to note that it is  not necessary to purchase or hire costumes for Book Week. Many of the most entertaining and creative costumes are those designed and made by students from readily available, repurposed materials.

Students are permitted to wear their costumes to school and remain in them for the day, but if they choose not to dress up as a book character, they can wear their sports uniform.

The Parade for Primary students will be held at 9.15am in the College Hall.  Parents and carers are welcome to attend the parade, and are to be seated in the Mezzanine Area of the Hall by 9:10am.
