District Netball
10 students qualified to compete in the Monash Waverley Division Netball Finals on Wednesday 30 July at the Waverley Netball Centre in Glen Waverley.
Last Wednesday Sienna and I plus eight other girls went to the Division finals to play against other school netball teams that made it to finals. We started playing at 9.30am and finished at 2pm. Throughout the day we played four teams and we won two matches and lost two.
We played Mount View, St Lukes and Good Shepherd twice. It was a really fun day even though we didn’t make finals and came fifth overall out of eight teams.
Thanks to Miss Kemp for training us and Ms Hocking for helping us on the day. Also, thanks to our parents for driving us there and back.

Division Tee-Ball
Our qualifying Tee-Ball team participated in the Monash Waverley Division competition on Friday 1 August at the Waverley Softball Centre in Glen Waverley.
On Friday 1st of August the Tee Ball mixed team represented Essex Heights at the Monash Waverley Division finals. We successfully won every inter-school sports game each week in tee-ball and were so excited to represent our school.
We played at a very foggy Waverley Softball Ground, playing three games in our side of the draw. We played Glen Waverley Primary and won, then Parkhill Primary School and won 11-0. In the last game we had 0-11 runs after the first innings but reset our game plan and came back to score 9 runs for a final score of 9-11. The two grand finalists were chosen based on their wins and then determined by total runs and winning margins. Our comeback in the final match meant our team got through to the Grand Final.
In the Grand Final, Essex Heights played Huntingtower. It was a VERY tough match and umpired well. We ended up losing the final with a score of 13-3, but we won a Runners Up flag which will be hung in the Stadium proudly from now on.
We had a fantastic day and a lot of fun. Thank you to Ms Hocking for organising us for the day, and Miss Dare for coaching us and supporting us on the way.

Region Hockey
The boys’ hockey team played some absolutely amazing matches at the Eastern Metropolitan Region Hockey Finals at Doncaster Hockey Club in Donvale last Friday, 15 August. It was very exciting to watch their outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship, encouraging one another throughout all matches. This positive team spirit helped them during an extremely tense semifinal. It was one all after full time, so they played another five minutes and no team scored. The rules meant they had to reduce the number of players on the field for another five minutes and still no score. A shoot out resulted and thanks to some fantastic defending by Mason and goal shooting by Josh and Marcus, we were victorious.
It was very exciting for our players who kept their cool and supported each other from the sidelines. There was a quick 20 minute break to refuel and rest before the final. The magnificent teamwork continued and the boys won 2-0, beating Mount View to become the Eastern Region winners and qualify to compete in the State finals on Thursday 11 September.
A massive thanks to Patrick for coaching, the family members for transporting the children and cheering loudly in very cold conditions.
Congratulations and best of luck for the State Hockey finals.
Monique Hocking
On the 15th of August, we competed at the Eastern Region Hockey Championships at Doncaster Hockey Club.
We started our journey three weeks before with just two training sessions – the majority of our team had never played hockey before. We knew it would be a tough day playing experienced hockey teams but we still had belief we could do well.
The teams in our group were Yarra Valley Grammar and Mount View.
We started the day defeating Mount View Primary School 5-0 with goals from Josh, Divesh and myself. Our confidence was high but we knew from last year you have to be focussed each game as it gets harder and harder. Next, we had Yarra Valley Grammar and whilst it was tight, we got through 2-0 with goals to Divesh and myself.
We had topped our group and were through to the semi-finals where we would face a tough school in Solway Primary who had a fully experienced hockey team with a team of hockey coaches. From the starting minute we were under pressure and were quickly down 1-0. But we wouldn’t let this get us down. Our coach made the changes with Divesh moved to striker where he equalled the scores with a quick flick through the keeper low left. Slowly we were wearing down our much more experienced team down but ended at 1-1. It went to overtime where both teams tried hard but couldn’t score. In what had never occurred before, the SSV officials entered the pitch and told us it was 3 vs 3 overtime golden goal. Mason, Josh and myself ran ourselves to exhaustion as did our opponents, but it was still 1-1. It was going to penalties. Josh and I managed to score and Mason proved the hero saving the deciding penalty to send us to the Grand Final where would face the Mount View A team.
Despite exhaustion, the Essex Heights Hockey team used the adrenaline and momentum to win 2-0 with goals from Mavi and myself. We were through to State finals!
Whilst we weren’t experienced and most of the team had never seen a hockey pitch, we were through to the State finals to take place on 11th September. Our team spirit was our true weapon.
Recognizing the efforts of our team: Divesh, Josh, Mason, Jeremy, Mavi, Henry, Nick, Deric, Timmo and Marcus.
Thank you to Ms Hocking for organising and allowing us to play and to our coach, my dad Patrick.
Wish us luck at the State Finals!
