Celebrating the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop – August 8

Last week, we honoured Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first canonised saint, whose life and legacy continue to inspire us today. Mary MacKillop dedicated her life to education, compassion, and service - especially to those most in need. Her famous words, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” remind us of the power of kindness, action, and faith.

Born in 1842, Mary co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and established schools across Australia to ensure children in rural and disadvantaged communities had access to education. Her courage, humility, and deep trust in God remain a guiding light for Catholic communities across the country.

Loving God,

We thank you for the gift of Saint Mary MacKillop,

who showed us how to live with faith, courage, and compassion.

May her example inspire us to serve others generously,

to stand up for justice, and to trust in your loving care.

Help us to follow her footsteps by being people of action and prayer,

bringing hope and kindness into our school, 

our homes, and our world.

May we, like Mary, never see a need without doing something about it.
