Year 7 Wiradjuri Excursion

Kengal (The Rock) and Marrocka Emu Farms

On Tuesday 18th August, Year 7 LOTE students had the exciting opportunity to visit Kengal (The Rock) and Marrocka Emu Farms to complement their learning of Wiradjuri language.

Students explored tools, practices, stories, plants and animals that are important to Wiradjuri culture. At the Emu Farm, students got to learn interesting facts about emus, hold baby chicks and even see a baby emu hatching out from an egg.

Activities at Kengal included a Welcome to County with Uncle Richard, viewing Aboriginal artefacts, spear throwing, and a bush walk to see a special scar tree. Uncle Richard shared the story of the three dingoes and why it is important for Wiradjuri culture. Students then worked together to build a gunya (shelter) using sticks, branches and bark. A big thank you goes out to Uncle Richard, Mr Makin, Mr Kelly, Mr Dore, and Mr Gawne. And an extra special mention to Jess for providing the delicious lunch!
