Calm Down Strategy - Re-directing
Redirecting is a highly effective calm-down strategy as it gently shifts a child’s focus away from a trigger or overwhelming emotion toward a different activity. This physical or mental change helps interrupt the body’s stress response and gives the brain a chance to move out of “fight, flight, or freeze” mode.
Simple redirection strategies might include:
- Going for a short walk
- Drawing or colouring
- Listening to music
- Helping with a simple task
- Reading a book
- Taking slow breaths while focusing on an object
By redirecting attention in a calm and supportive way, adults can help children regulate their emotions and feel safe enough to regain control.
