Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

We can’t believe we have reached the final week of Term 3. It has been another busy and rewarding term in the Year 5/6 classrooms, with so much wonderful learning taking place. 

In English, we have continued to explore persuasive devices and have created some fantastic magazine articles designed to persuade readers to visit some of our favourite destinations. In 56M some of the great persuasive pieces were written about England, Thailand, Apollo Bay, and Portarlington, as well as some places much closer to home, the Woodend Golf Club and Daisy’s House. 

Our class novel this term has been Spirit of the Crocodile by Michelle Scott Tucker and Aaron Fa’Aoso. We have loved following the story of Ezra, a 12 year old boy who lives on Saibai Island in the Torres Strait. We were incredibly fortunate to have Woodend resident and co-author Michelle Scott Tucker visit us to talk about the process of writing the novel and share some of the techniques she used along the way. Students have since enjoyed experimenting with some of these techniques in their own writing. We were even treated to a personalised message from Aaron Fa’Aoso! A big thank you to Evie Bates and her family for recommending the novel and helping us connect with this wonderful local author.

In Maths, students have been investigating 3D shapes by identifying vertices, edges and faces, as well as exploring prisms and cross sections. This week, we have moved into measurement, using formal units to estimate, measure and compare mass and capacity. 

Our Inquiry learning has also finished on a high! Students were very excited to share the cubbies they designed and constructed with the Year 3 and 4 students. Each cubby incorporated two electrical circuits - one using a battery and light, and another featuring a pressure plate, battery and light. It was fantastic to see students proudly explaining their designs and demonstrating their understanding of electrical circuits to younger students. 

Congratulations to all of our students who have competed in sporting finals over the past few weekends!

Preparations for Year 5 leadership speeches and Year 6 Graduation are already well underway. Term 4 is shaping up to be another very busy term, with plenty to look forward to. More information will be shared after the holidays.
