Article by Ashley Sheldrick, Year 9 Leader

Recently, our school community had the opportunity to participate in a webinar titled AI & Respectful Relationships: Chatbots, Companions and Young People's Digital Reality. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with nearly all attendees rating the session as highly relevant and leaving feeling more confident in supporting their young people to engage with AI safely and critically.

  • 92% rated the webinar highly

  • 95% said the session was relevant

  • 98% felt more confident supporting young people with AI chatbots and companions

We know that many parents are eager for more guidance in this space, and we want to continue that conversation. Below you will find a resource guide with further information and practical strategies you can use at home.

For those interested in going further, a recording of the webinar is also available by following this link - (password: Respect).

Our next Community of Practice webinar is scheduled for Wednesday 5th August. Elephant Ed have sourced a wonderful expert panel, who will be discussing how to manage sexism and misogyny in the classroom.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Year 9 team if you have any questions or would like to discuss any of the topics raised.  Additional expert support can be accessed via the resources below.

Exams

I am sure, like our students, parents are relieved that the exam period is over. As I have previously explained, the exam period offers students the opportunity to become familiar with exam protocols, special provision conditions and study routines. The staff commented several times how impressed they were with student behaviour and the seriousness with which they completed the exams

We often find that students perform better in Semester 2 exams. This could be due to a number of factors which include:

  • Motivation to do better than previous exams

  • Appreciating the effort required to get good grades

  • Knowing where to find exam revision resources

  • Maturity

If your child is disappointed with their exam performance, these are useful touch points to discuss.

In the coming weeks, students will be receiving feedback about their exams and reviewing their progress in achieving their goals.

Continuation of such conversations at home, help to reinforce the concept of a growth mindset.
