War Horse Text Study

In our Literacy program this term, we have been reading the historical narrative 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. This wonderful novel tells the story of Joey, a brave and plucky horse who is taken away from his human friend Albert and thrust into the battles of the First World War. Here are some of our favourite parts so far:

  • Harley - "My favourite part of War Horse so far was when Topthorn and Joey went from being super competitive to slowly becoming closer and closer until they were best friends."
  • Dwayne - "One of my favorite parts (but also kind of sad) was the chapter when Joey and Topthorn went to Germany. I liked it because the story was heading one way but then the author took us another way and it surprising."
  • Ruby - "My favourite bit in War Horse was when Emilie was sick but then she came back and she said straight away that she needed to give the horses food and hay".
  • Joanah - "My favourite part is that Emilie loved the horses so much that she had the courage to stand up to the soliders and tell them they were her horses and they had to bring them back and take care of them."
  • Abel - "A sad part of the story was when Captain Nicholls died. This made me said because now Joey was alone again, because he lost Albert and then Captain Nicholls."

Lent - Project Compassion

During Lent, we are supporting Project Compassion, raising money to help vulnerable communities around the world access education, food, and opportunities for a better future. This is such a lovely way for us to live out our faith in practical action, and fits in perfectly with our Faith and Social Justice unit this term. So far, we have raised $85.85 of our $100 goal, we are so close and thank you to all of those who have given so generously over the first two weeks of Lent.

Factors, Multiples and Divisibility

In Numeracy, we have been exploring factors, multiples and divisibility, applying different divisibility rules to solve problems. This has involved listening to what students have described as a “very annoying” song (I strongly disagree!) and playing a Minecraft-themed multiples game that has brought out some serious enthusiasm. It has been wonderful to see students building both their confidence and their mathematical thinking. Don't forget to check Seesaw, where students share their Rich Assessment Tasks and their assessment rubrics.

Learning Showcase - Save the Date

In Inquiry this term, we have been working on a unit called 'Making Democracy'. Students have been learning about the three levels of government, and have created triarama models to show off their learning. Later in the term, we have the Mayor of Frankston coming to chat to the students about her role, and we also have a law-making incursion to explore how Bills pass through Parliament. All of this amazing work will be on display at our end-of-term Learning Showcase, so pop Thursday the 2nd of April at 2pm in your calendar and stay tuned!
