Mullauna’s debaters were particularly busy last week, some doing double duty.
On Wednesday, April 29, two of our three teams went to Tintern Grammar to represent the college in the Ringwood division of the Debating Association of Victoria’s inter-school competition. Year 9 students April Stacey, Grey Cameron and Kasper Leoncelli contested in the association’s D-grade competition; Year 10s Ethan Blakeman, Georgia Giannaris and Bella McKinnon debated in the C-grade one. The Year 11 team (B-grade) debaters had a bye.
In just their second inter-school debate, Grey, April and Kasper had a good win against Yarra Valley Grammar. They had argued that mobile phones should not be used as a learning tool in schools. April and Grey were both named ‘best speaker’. Mr Graham was their coach.
In their debate – against another Yarra Valley Grammar team - Bella, Ethan and Georgia argued strongly against the proposal that “all young people aged 16-22 years old should receive a Universal Basic Income from the government”. They narrowly lost the excellent debate. They were coached by Ms Davidson.
Debaters were at it again on Thursday’s Open Night. April, Grey and Bella all took part in a second night of debating. They were joined in the debate by Year 10s Aidan Vidovic, Jeremy Jian and Year 8 student Christina Nikitin. All the debaters did well in a high-level debate. They managed to keep concentrating even through the Open Night hubbub. Once again April took out the best speaker award.
