Italian News at St Patrick’s – Weather, Seasons and Christmas!

Ciao a tutti! (Hello everyone!)

Our Italian classes are exploring il tempo (the weather), le stagioni (the seasons) and Natale (Christmas)! Students will develop their Italian language skills through songs, games, stories, movement, craft, quizzes and fun, interactive activities.

Foundation students will learn simple Italian weather words and Christmas vocabulary. They will discover how Christmas in Italy can be different from Christmas in Australia, exploring traditions, food, decorations and the difference between a European winter Christmas and our Australian summer celebrations.

Grade 1/2 students will build their confidence asking and answering Che tempo fa? (What’s the weather like?) and describing different weather conditions in Italian. They will extend their knowledge of the seasons and explore Italian Christmas traditions.

Grade 3 students will learn to describe the weather and seasons using simple Italian sentences. They will also interpret and create short weather texts while comparing the seasons and weather patterns in Italy and Australia.

Grades 4–6 students will investigate weather patterns, temperatures and seasonal changes in both countries. They will practise using Italian weather expressions, asking and answering questions, and discussing primavera (spring), estate (summer), autunno (autumn) and inverno (winter).

Through these learning experiences, students will strengthen their Italian communication skills while developing an appreciation of Italian culture and traditions.

A little Italian to practise at home!

  • C’è il sole! – It’s sunny!
  • Piove! – It’s raining!
  • Nevica! – It’s snowing!
  • Buon Natale! – Merry Christmas!

SPORT

Term 4 has commenced and we've returned to Sport with beautiful weather for being outdoors.

We continue to play some fun team- and resilience-building games as our warm-up each week.  It's always a pleasure to watch the children's sportsmanship develop across each year.

Our first topic for the term is cricket, and before we ease into some fun games, we've started by brushing up on our basic skills.  This has looked like throwing and catching (with a tricky tennis ball!) for our juniors, and bowling and batting for our older students.

In the photos below notice the lovely, straight bowling arms - if you'd see them at the start of the lesson to their improvement by the end of the lesson, you'd be amazed!! A textbook example of 'perfect practice makes perfect'.

ART

We have begun learning about Food & Fibre production in Art, Design and technology this term across all year levels. Students began by learning about hunting and gathering practices of Indigenous people and then chose an animal or plant to great an Aboriginal inspired artwork focusing on using the design element, line.

DRAMA

We're busily working on things to show you all for the Specialist Showcase! Here are some still images from the videos we've been making - students are making music videos to go with songs! They've been rehearsing dance moves and using expression and  body language to show what's happening in the story of the song.
