Grade 1 Cultural Drumming Incursion

As part of our Curiosity unit on Identity, our Grade 1 students enjoyed an exciting Cultural Drumming Incursion with Rhythm Unites. The hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to explore different cultures, traditions and celebrations from around the world.

During the session, students explored a variety of traditional instruments, music and cultural clothing from Australia, Africa, the Middle East, Indonesia and India. They listened to the unique sounds of clapsticks, learned about the African djembe and had lots of fun playing their own djembe while learning a traditional rhythm. Some students also had the opportunity to try on traditional cultural clothing.

Following the incursion many of our students were able to create their own musical instruments out of recycled materials.This was lots of fun and students got very creative with making their own instruments. 

Through music, exploring cultural dress and movement our grade one students also made connections between different cultures and discussed how so many cultures are linked through similarities like love for food, music, coming together and cultural celebrations.
