PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT  

At our recent Wellbeing and Safeguarding Closure Day, staff spent valuable time unpacking and discussing all of the Child Safe Standards. This was a highly productive day that allowed us to reflect on our practices, strengthen our understanding, and ensure that child safety remains at the centre of everything we do at SME.  

HIGH FIVES OVER HUGS 

As a school, we are encouraging a culture of ‘high-fives over hugs’ when greeting, congratulating, or celebrating with others. This simple approach supports the important concepts of personal boundaries, respect, and consent. 

While hugs can be a positive way to show care and connection, not everyone is comfortable with physical contact. Encouraging high-fives, fist bumps, waves, and other respectful greetings helps children learn that everyone has the right to choose how they interact with others. We would love families to support this message at home by encouraging children to ask for permission before physical contact and to respect the choices of others. This approach aligns with our commitment to child safety and helps build a culture of respect and consent across our community.
