Discovering the Changing Earth!

Our Grade 5 students have been having a fantastic time exploring the incredible ways our Earth’s surface is constantly changing! Over the past few weeks, our classroom has been filled with research, experiments and creativity as students have investigated the natural forces that shape our planet.

A big part of our learning has on natural hazards, with students choosing to investigate volcanoes, cyclones, floods, wildfires focused and earthquakes. Working as researchers, students looked at the type of hazard they had, it’s causes, common locations and damage that can be caused. They also discovered some of the most famous examples of these hazards from throughout history and explored the impact these events have had on people, communities and the environment. The finished posters have been a fantastic reflection of their hard work and curiosity!

Our learning hasn’t just stayed on paper, either! Students have also been getting hands on with experiments to investigate weathering and erosion. One of the favourite activities so far involved using chalk and sandpaper to model weathering and then adding water to observe the effects of erosion. Students were able to see how materials can be broken down and moved by natural processes. Through these activities, students have discovered that the Earth’s surface is never truly still. Some changes happen suddenly, while others happen gradually.

It has been wonderful to watch our Grade 5 students become such enthusiastic Earth explorers, showing great curiosity, creativity and teamwork throughout the unit so far!
