Fire, Milo's Birthday Surprise, 100 Days of Prep, SES

We have had a very busy few months in Prep with special visits and celebrations; we have much to catch up on.

Firefighter Incursion

At the end of Term Two we had two visits from our local fire fighters. On their first visit, the firefighters taught us about safe fires and unsafe fires. They told us when we see smoke we should, “Get down low and go, go, go”. They also gave us some homework in deciding a safe meeting place with our families if there is an emergency. We saw the firefighter uniforms and the oxygen tanks they use to help rescue people in a fire.

We were so lucky on their second visit when they brought the fire truck into our school and we all got a turn to try using the fire hose. Even the teachers and LSOs got a turn! They showed us the sirens and flashing lights and we got to go inside the fire tuck.

Milo’s Birthday Surprise

Throughout Prep, we have been reading Milo’s Birthday Surprise to learn each letter and sound in the alphabet. When we finished the entire book, we held a surprise Birthday Party for Milo. We created animal masks and designed animal biscuits as part of the celebration. It was a great way for everyone to reflect on how much we have learned.

100 Days of Prep

On the 29th of July, Prep students celebrated their 100th day of school. We celebrated all the achievements from prep students in their transition to primary school over the last 100 days, with a funny opportunity to dress up as people who are 100 years old. We were so impressed by everyone’s commitment and effort to making this a memorable day. The Prep students did a fantastic job during their assembly and performance of the Cento Joli song. We continued the celebration with the senior citizen’s theme by playing bingo, doing some chair aerobics and singing some karaoke songs. We are all so proud of the progress each prep student has made since the beginning of the school year.

SES incursion

Our final “Community Helpers” incursion was from the State Emergency Services. They started by telling us about their role, that they are volunteers and the types of jobs they get called out to. They taught us about how to prepare for a storm by securing loose items and having spare lights available in case the electricity goes out. We learned about the different types of floods and that it is never safe to play in flood water as we don’t know what could be in there. The SES volunteers demonstrated this outside with a basin of pretend flood water where we had to use tongs to remove all the dangerous items which could be hidden in there such as rubbish, broken glass, branches, needles, rats, snakes and even poop! We all got a turn to climb into the emergency truck and see the different parts inside. We were treated to a demonstration of some of the tools used by the SES such as flood lights, the ladder, chainsaws, lights, ropes and leaf blowers.
