SLA

In Literacy, students have been learning about narratives through song, exploring how songs can tell stories through characters, settings, and events. They have enjoyed analysing lyrics and making connections to narrative structures. Here are some samples of student work that demonstrate their learning and creativity throughout the unit.

SLA 1

As he walks through the dark alley harsh wind and smoke brush him across the face, a cold chill runs through his body as the dark shadows consumed him, every footstep he took echoed loudly against the walls and the wet metal kept dripping with water, making it feel like someone was trailing right behind him but his eyes stayed glued to the darkness ahead. He smelled rust and wet rain the further he went in, the concrete below was cracked and in between looked like a black hole that would consume him whole, as he kept walking he could finally see a dim light shining though the misty shadows as he struggles to move the mist across his face he moves out of the dark shadows, not knowing awaiting him was the battle of the century life or death was at risk.

Floating Past

I’m here at home, my only place

Where I know is the safe space

I find myself floating by,

As I wonder while looking in the sky

I don’t feel my legs touch the floor, so I keep on floating more and more

As I cry for help, but no one hears,

I see some people gathered near

So, I splash some water close to them

They don’t notice so I grab a stem,

I call for help one more time,

Then their heads look for mine

A group of four made it in

As the water reached my chin,

I tried to pull myself where people could see,

But before I could, someone pulled me.

SLA 3

In SLA3 students wrote ballads made up of stanzas.  Each stanza needed to have 4 sentences, and to include devices such as descriptive words, imagery, repetition and rhyme.

Unknown

Written by Angelina

New year, new me.

A fresh start to see.

A kind teacher welcomed and smiled at me,

Yet somehow, deep inside, something felt off to me.

No longer run, no longer hide

I have hope, I have heart

Don’t fear the unknown

I searched for friends to laugh and play.

My hope slowly faded day by day.

I gave up and drifted away.

Keeping my heart hidden each day.

No longer run, no longer hide

I have hope, I have heart

Don’t fear the unknown

As time went on, I started to see maybe this place was not meant for me.

I felt alone, with no one near me,

I wondered why I even tried.

I was to run and hide.

No longer run, no longer hide

I have hope, I have heart

Don’t fear the unknown

In year 6 it was a new year and a new me.

A fresh start to see with new friends along my journey.

I will miss them as time goes on.

They helped me with my heart and made me smile.

No longer run, no longer hide

I have hope, I have heart

Don’t fear the unknown

Now as I head into high school, I feel nervous for what is ahead.

It will be another new beginning and a fresh start.

I can see the opportunities I will enjoy.

But I will miss my good friends who I bonded with.
