What Are We Learning?

English:

Students have been exploring both narrative and persuasive writing through our novel study of The Barnabus Project. Our learning has focused on:

• Understanding how authors use sentence rhythm to build tension.
• How punctuation is used to shape mood and meaning. 
• Using strong verbs to build clear imagery. 
• Comparing how different sentence styles create different effects.
• Building typing skills and writing stamina through regular practice

Students have been learning how authors carefully choose their words and sentence structures to influence readers, and have been applying these techniques in their own writing.

Mathematics:

In Maths, our focus has shifted to Measurement, particularly exploring length and capacity. Students have been learning to:

• Identify and order metric units (millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres)
• Choose the most appropriate unit when measuring different objects or distances
• Understand how units relate to each other using powers of 10
• Measure and compare distances using a range of tools and units
• Apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, explaining and justifying their thinking

We have been building students’ ability to think critically about measurement, encouraging them to explain their reasoning and make practical, real-world connections.

Upcoming Events: 

Family Teacher Conversations:

Family-Teacher Conversations will be taking place on Monday & Tuesday April the 27th and 28th (Week 2 of Term 2) from 3:30pm-6:45pm. Bookings are now open on Compass and they'll be open over the holidays. We encourage families to please book a time with your child's classroom teacher to discuss their learning progress and answer any questions you may have.

Year 5 Sovereign Hill Camp:

We are excited to announce that our Year 5 students, for the first time ever, will be embarking on an educational overnight camp to Sovereign Hill, a living museum that brings the history of the Victorian Gold Rush to life. This excursion is designed to complement our school's educational program, specifically aligning with the Humanities curriculum for Year 5 as outlined by the Victorian Curriculum. This overnight experience is a vital component of your child's learning for 2026, due to it's direct correlation to the classroom program.

The Sovereign Hill excursion will provide our students with a hands-on learning experience that directly ties into several key areas of the Year 5 Victorian Curriculum. The "Put Yourself in the Eureka Story", in particular, will allow students to role-play the experiences of miners, gold buyers, and troopers, offering a vivid understanding of the historical events leading up to the Eureka Rebellion in 1854. 

A Non Refundable $50 deposit must be made by 3rd April 2026 to confirm your spot on the Camp. The total cost of the camp is $275  to be paid in full by 29th May 2026.

Homework Reminder:

Please ensure students are:

• Practising times tables on timetables.com
• Reading for 20 minutes each night
• Practising their weekly spelling words
• Filling in their diaries daily
• Bringing their diaries to school every morning

Consistency with homework supports classroom learning and builds strong study habits.

Term 1 Celebration

The Year 5 teachers would like to congratulate all our students on a successful and positive first term of the year. We are very proud of how seamlessly the students have transitioned into Year 5 and are looking forward to a great Term 2 after the holidays!
