Our Learning - Week 10

The Outcomes are based on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). The VEYLDF is a curriculum framework designed for early childhood education in Victoria, focusing on children birth to eight years.

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

The children continue to demonstrate confidence in exploring the kindergarten environment, both indoors and outdoors, especially challenging their abilities on the obstacle course. Through small group play, children are continuing to build confidence and express their preferences and their needs to both educators and peers.

Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world

Within the four-year-old groups, children are increasingly engaging in cooperative play, working in small groups to share ideas and navigate emerging social dynamics. In the three-year-old program, children are beginning to play alongside peers with growing confidence, and are starting to demonstrate early skills in sharing and turn-taking.

The children demonstrate respect for their environment by caring for kindergarten resources both indoors and outdoors. They have also shown curiosity about the natural world, noticing birds building nests in the trees—some children have created birdhouses, while others have built their own nests. Additionally, several children have taken an interest in ants, exploring ant hills and learning about the different roles within their colonies.

Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

The children continue to explore wellbeing through self-care experiences, including concepts such as hairdressing and oral hygiene. A visiting dentist engaged the children in an interactive session, highlighting the importance of oral hygiene and encouraging them to brush their teeth twice a day, morning and night.

We also continue to promote independence by supporting children to pack and carry their own bags and confidently follow the morning routine of putting their own bags away. Educators foster problem-solving skills by encouraging children to try tasks independently first, then offering guidance by breaking tasks into manageable visual and verbal steps when needed.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners

Our STEM focus this fortnight has been on measurement, with children exploring how to compare objects using concepts such as longer/shorter and bigger/smaller. Through hands-on open ended experiences, they are building early numeracy skills and problem-solving.

Children have also been exploring life cycles based on their interests, including butterflies, ants, and stick insects. Through observation, discussion, and creative experiences, children are building their understanding of the natural world and living things.

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators

We continue to support children’s language development through repetition, modelling, and the use of visual cues to enhance understanding and communication. Within the kindergarten environment, children are provided with a range of opportunities to explore language through music, songs, stories, and everyday conversations. These experiences encourage children to express their ideas, build vocabulary, and engage meaningfully with their peers and educators.

Inquiry: Healthy choices, Healthy me.

An inquiry into:

  • Daily habits and routines
  • How the choices we make affect our health
  • What it means to have a balanced lifestyle

Over the course of the term, children will:

  • Develop their emerging autonomy, inter-dependence, resilience and sense of agency
  • Develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities
  • Express emotions and views constructively
