Learning Intentions and Success Criteria: Supporting Student Learning
At Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College, we are continuing our whole-school focus on embedding Learning Intentions and Success Criteria (LI/SC) as an important part of everyday teaching and learning. This work supports our commitment to ensuring students understand what they are learning, why it matters and how they can recognise their own progress and success.
Throughout Term 3, members of our Learning and Teaching Team conducted Learning Walks across the College to gather insights into how classrooms use Learning Intentions and Success Criteria.
It was encouraging to see the consistent use of Learning Intentions across a range of learning areas. These were visible in classrooms through whiteboards, student worksheets, learning materials, and SIMON lesson planning. Students were generally aware of their Learning Intentions and were often able to explain what they were learning.
An important area for our continued development is helping students make stronger connections between their Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and their own progress. While many students could identify what they were learning, they did not always explain how they knew they had been successful.
We also observed excellent teaching practices in which teachers actively revisited Learning Intentions and Success Criteria throughout lessons. Teachers used strategies such as class reflections, progress checks against Success Criteria, and exit tickets to encourage students to reflect on their understanding and achievements.
Where to next?
As we move through Term 4, we will focus on strengthening how teachers and students actively use Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, rather than simply having them visible in classrooms. Ultimately, we want all students to confidently answer two important questions:
How do I know if I am successful?
To support the next stage of this work, we will invite students and parents/carers to participate in surveys about embedding Learning Intentions and Success Criteria across the College. These surveys will provide valuable feedback on students' understanding of their learning and how effectively these practices support their progress. Parent and carer perspectives will also help us better understand how students communicate their learning and achievements at home.
Feedback from our Learning Walks and surveys will inform our ongoing professional learning and teaching priorities as we continue to strengthen consistent, evidence-informed teaching practices across the College.
We thank our dedicated teachers for their ongoing commitment to improving student learning and look forward to partnering with students and families as we continue this important work.
