Student Triumphs

Indigenous Art Award
We are so very thrilled to share with you that two of our Year 7 students were recently recognised in a national indigenous art competition. Archie Direen and Marcus Russell were the Tasmanian winners in the Under One Sky Art Competition, run by Interface Australia. It asked indigenous students to respond to the question: What does home mean to me?
As part of their prize, Archie and Marcus travelled to Sydney late last month to receive the award, see the sights including a footy game, and tour the sponsor's carpet factory where their artwork will be used as inspiration for a new collection. Art teacher Mrs Hope Smith, who worked closely with the students to enter the award, said the win was an enormous encouragement and recognition of the boys' talent.
Please enjoy reading these artist statements that demonstrate the thought and heart that went into creating the artworks:
"To me, home means exploring God's creation: nature, animals, trees, and enjoying the dirt. My artwork depicts kangaroos in the bush because they remind me of home. Growing up in Cygnet, I spent much of my time outdoors, playing in the dirt and exploring the bush. These memories bring me joy and inspire this work."
– Archie Direen
"To me, home means spending time in nature with my family and enjoying the moments we share together. My artwork reflects childhood memories of my mum singing the kookaburra song whenever we were driving in the car or spotted a kookaburra. Those memories make me feel connected to home."
– Marcus Russell
Bravo, boys, we're so proud of you!
Vocals
Year 7 student Leah Norton scored a perfect 100% for her Concert Certificate One, Singing examination in the St Cecilia September series of examinations in Launceston.
The examiner commented on Leah's stage presentation and ability to fully engage the audience. Pictured with Leah is her teacher, Catherine Connell of Miss B's Student Services.
Congratulations Leah, what a wonderful achievement!
Representing the North
A big shout-out to the following students who were selected to represent the North in the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS) Rep day on Friday September 4 at Launceston Church Grammar School.
Girls Soccer:
Catherine Morgan and Hadassah Buist
(Joelle Gunnink was also selected but unavailable to play).
Boys Soccer:
Eden Sturdy, Desmond Mwambeyu and Eric Piri Piri.
Boys Basketball:
Riley Powell (Charlie Baker was also selected but unavailable to play).
Our students did a great job representing both LCS and NSATIS on the day, and the results between the Northern and Southern teams were as follows:
Boys Basketball NSATIS defeated SSATIS 88-61
Girls Soccer NSATIS defeated SSATIS 3-2
Boys Soccer SSATIS defeated NSATIS 6-2
Deloraine Drama Festival
The LCS Drama Club (under the expert direction of Angela Edwards) performed at the Deloraine Drama Festival on September 9. They performed the play Eleanor and the Princess, written by Mrs Edwards, about dragons and knights, a princess and a king, and performed with great expression and dynamism.
Congratulations to Micah Edwards who received the runners-up actor award, and to Vera de Ruiter and Adelaide van Ryn who received Honourable Mentions. We're also incredibly grateful to Mrs Edwards who has invested many, many volunteer hours into this performance and the drama club.
Touch Football
Christian Wedlock was selected to play in the Tasmanian u12 boys team in touch football. The National Youth Championships were on September 28 - October 2 in Coffs Harbour. At the time of publication, we were still waiting to hear how he went!
Whatever the result, well done Christian! What an achievement.
Basketball
George Hammond, Bonnie Myers and Gisele Huizenga represented the state for Basketball this term. They played in the U14 Foot Locker National Club Championships held in Perth, WA, from 27 September to 2 October 2026.
Again, at the time of publication, we were still waiting to hear the final results on how they went. But we do know they play a total of 8 games over the course of the tournament and rumour has it they have faced some tough competition. Regardless they have all loved the experience and it’s been wonderful for their personal growth and on court development.
Volleyball Finals!
Wednesday 30th September saw our Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams make the trip down the Midland Highway to compete in the SATIS State Finals in Hobart.
Our boys were first up against Hutchins in their impressive new gymnasium. LCS competed strongly, but Hutchins proved too good on the day, taking the match in straight sets 25–19, 25–15, 25–20. While we couldn’t add the State title to the trophy cabinet, it doesn’t take away from an outstanding season for our NSATIS Champion Boys!
We then headed across town to Guilford Young College, where our girls were revisiting the site of our first ever Girls State Volleyball Final back in 2024. And what a match it was!
The opening set looked all but gone, with LCS trailing 18–24 and facing six set points. But the girls showed incredible resolve and determination, producing a classic “Wharfie Time” comeback to somehow snatch the set 27–25!
That proved to be the turning point. With momentum firmly behind them, the girls powered through the next two sets 25–15, 25–19 to win in straight sets and be crowned SATIS State Premiers for the second year in a row!
A massive shout out to Eli Hill, Mr. Nathan Hill and Miss Susan Davies for the enormous amount of time and effort they have put into our three Senior Volleyball teams this year.
An outstanding season of LCS Volleyball.
Go LCS!
