Term Three

The OG Principal

LCS recently had the honour of welcoming the OG Principal Mr Peter van der Schoor onto campus for a tour and a chat. As part of our 50-year anniversary celebrations, we've been working behind the scenes to capture some of our school's invaluable oral history. And what treasure Mr van der Schoor brought!

Seeing him walk into classrooms and interact with our students, it was like he had never left. His ease and warmth was endearing, and he shared some incredible insights into how different school life was back when he served as the first Principal.

Mr van der Schoor recalled the excitement of the library receiving its 100th book (we now have more than 10,000!). He said the best day was when the farmer slashed the adjacent paddocks and students were allowed to play in the cut grass (and came back to class with hay fever!). He had a Primary class in giggles as he told them about the time a student had to be rescued after they tried to climb out a window and their shorts got stuck on the window winder.

Mr van der Schoor was also delighted to be taught something new himself by a four-year-old kindergarten student introducing the class pet lizard. Did you know that lizards have three eyes?

A hearty thank you to Mr van der Schoor for taking the time to visit us and give a unique perspective on our school's early days.

Mt Buller

Every second winter our Year 10-12 students have the opportunity to carve up the slopes in Victoria and this year it was on Mt Buller. And what an absolute blast we had. Not only was it a time for deepening relationships and developing skills in the snow, it was a wonderful time of enjoying a different slice of God's creation.

Thank you to the LCS staff who diligently plan to make this happen every second year, and also those who volunteer their time for the trip. Who's looking forward to attending next time?

Outdoor Education

One of our most popular Year 11 and 12 subjects is Outdoor Education, and with experiences like the one captured in this stunning photo, it's little wonder. We are grateful to be able to offer a brimming program that enables students to interact with God's creation in new and adventurous ways. Additional to stand-up paddle boarding and surfing, the subject gives students a taste of everything from mountain biking, kayaking and abseiling to canyoning, fishing, snorkelling, and multi-day hikes and day walks.

Teachers Mr Josh Armstrong and Mr Thomas Macqueen bring the energy and enthusiasm, as well as a deep understanding for the way our interactions with creation can sharpen our relationship with the Creator himself.

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

Book Week

The Green Sheep, Prince Caspian, Alice in Wonderland, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Three Little Pigs, Winnie the Pooh and The Rainbow Fish. These were just some of the worlds invoked when our students embraced Book Week in full costume, celebrating books and reading.

On Monday August 24, The Jubilee Centre was packed with parents who came to watch our students parade their outfits. The teachers got in on the act too, with leadership dressing to the theme of the Chronicles of Narnia, The Very Hungry Caterpillar,  and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's also been marvellous to see Secondary students embrace the chance to participate in Book Week - because a love of reading (and imaginative play) shouldn't stop at Year 6!

Mrs Elizabeth Hanna and Dr Amy Kamphuis have gone above and beyond this year, offering all sorts of bookish opportunities including the Book Fair and Cosy Reading Night. They dressed in a different book-themed costume every day of Book Week. We hope you enjoyed seeing your children engage in Book Week this year. Be sure to continue encouraging their reading habits at home.

JackJumpers Visit

Our Primary School students were more than a little bit excited to meet some of the Tasmania JackJumpers basketball team this term. David Johnson, Taran Armstrong, Nicholas Stoddart and Josh Bannan came to the LCS gym and shared some of their professional basketball career journey before playing off against select grade teams, performing some group drills and signing merchandise.

The atmosphere was energetic and LOUD – which is always a good indication that everyone was enjoying themselves! A big thank you to the Tasmania JackJumpers  for visiting our school and inspiring future players.

Rock Challenge

It was loud, it was buzzing and it was the most wonderful opportunity for our students to reveal their hidden musical talents. The 2026 LCS Rock Challenge attracted a great crowd of parents and peers, cheering on our young musicians and vocalists from Primary through to Senior Secondary.

There was rock, pop, indie and acoustic tunes, originals and covers, eliciting toe-tapping, head-nodding and even some singing along. Year 9 band Blood Moon went through to the state final – great work Samuel Young, Zachary Lim and Henry Midson!

A big thank you to the staff who brought this event together, including Mr Peter Stewart, Mr Nick Hill and Mr Andrew Swift. Thanks also to the Secondary SLC who ran the canteen.

Primary and Secondary Socials

Our students had the opportunity to let their hair down at the Year 5/6 80s themed social on September 17, and the Secondary Y2K themed social on September 10. We loved seeing the Primary and Secondary SLC step up and lead these events, organising everything from ticketing and canteen to games and prizes. Thank you to all the teachers and staff who supported these events (and didn't mind dressing to the theme!).

Australian Girls Choir Visit

We were absolutely thrilled this term to host the Australian Girls Choir. The national tour group comprised 59 choristers and in week nine, they converged on The Jubilee Centre for a school concert before conducting a choir workshop for the LCS Junior Vocal Ensemble as well as choir students from St Anthony's Catholic Primary School, St Thomas More's Catholic School, Invermay Primary and East Launceston Primary.

In the afternoon, there was a pizza party followed by a concert for parents and families including performances by the AGC and the Singfest Choir. The concert concluded with an ensemble combining the five schools and the AGC for two beautiful songs.

The atmosphere was positive, and the voices and choreography of movement was inspiring, a wonderful celebration of the gifts and talents of the students participating.  When we asked LCS students today if they enjoyed the visit, the response was emphatically "Yes!" and there were many with aspirations to join the Australian Girls Choir if they have the opportunity.

A big thank you to Mrs Lyndle van Zetten, the Primary SLC and the organising team for everything they did to make sure the day ran smoothly. And we pray every blessing on the tour group as they continue their itinerary throughout Tasmania.

Alumni Volleyball

On Saturday September 19, LCS hosted the inaugural Alumni Volleyball Tournament, with seven teams coming together for a fantastic day of volleyball, fun and community, celebrating 50 years of our school.

Each team played each other once in 15-minute timed games, creating a great atmosphere of participation, sportsmanship and some excellent volleyball. The Grand Final saw Volleyball UNCS take on Donnie’s Diggers, with both teams featuring a mix of past and current LCS volleyball players. It was fantastic to see last year’s Year 12 graduates and volleyball players competing alongside members of this year’s team. Volleyball UNCS was victorious!

Parents and older past students also got involved, making it a great celebration of volleyball across our school community, and a sausage sizzle kept spectators well fed throughout the day. A huge thank you to everyone who played, supported and helped make the inaugural tournament such a salubrious day!

LCS Can Drive

This term, Launceston Christian School students raided their pantries and brought non-perishables for the annual can drive, with all donations going to Launceston City Mission.

The donations went towards the Mission's Spring Food Drive. City Mission General Manager Projects and Partnerships, Phil Beeston, was thrilled with the efforts of LCS students.

"We are better when we work together in community," he said.

"Our impact here at City Mission is so much greater, especially when supporting those who are most vulnerable, when we rally together.

"In this cost-of-living crisis, having a well-stocked pantry at the Mission means we can help those experiencing food insecurity and to get through a tough time with loving support."

Mr Beeston said the 1,157 items donated by LCS families would stock the "little supermarket" style facility at City Mission, which gives people in crisis the agency to select the items they need.

The LCS Can Drive always stirs some healthy competition, with school houses vying for the accolade of 'most generous' (and 'most humble'!). From the 1,157 items donated, Melaleuca came out ahead with 444, followed by Tamar (397) and Barrow (316). Thank you to the Secondary SLC for planning the drive, and all the families for supporting it. City Mission is always happy to receive donations at any of their sites.

Lighthouse Time!

Our Year 6 students have finished their lighthouse projects, and what a display! The much-anticipated unit asks the question: What guides us? It not only encourages creativity, research into history and technology, and skills in construction and design, but also to consider the biblical symbolism of the lighthouse.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Here are the beautiful 2026 lighthouses:

TRJ Mentor Evening

As part of The Rite Journey program, our Year 9 students have been meeting with a mentor and working on a practical, skill-based project and poster. Last night was the culmination of the mentorship, an evening for sharing these projects and skills with the rest of the cohort.

Students set up their displays in The Jubilee Centre, and there was a wonderful range of creativity for parents and friends to look at. From floral acts of kindness and learning to crochet, to rock-climbing, mosaics, woodwork and trying new things.

It all builds towards the TRJ focus on deepening student experience through connection, collaboration, consciousness and conversation as they transition to adulthood. Our prayer is that these mentors would be lasting, and that our students would be encouraged to flourish on their unique journeys.

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Proverbs 27:17
