Literacy:

Over the past two weeks, our Prep students finished learning about the letters Yy and Zz. They practised identifying the sounds these letters make and used them to read and write words such as yes, yak, yap and zip.

The students also continued building their knowledge of tricky words, learning to read and use they and want. They enjoyed practising these words through a range of reading, writing and phonics activities.

Grade 1/2 students have been learning about the ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ sounds, exploring words such as boy, toy, annoy, coin and point. They also learnt about the suffixes ‘-er’ and ‘-est’ and explored how these can be added to words to compare people, places or things. The students enjoyed applying their learning through a range of reading, spelling and writing activities.

For Writing in the Junior Room, students finished their Information Report unit, creating informative reports about dragonflies and the Red Palm Cockatoo. They researched and organised information to share interesting facts with their audience.

The students then moved on to Procedural Writing, where they learnt how to structure and lay out a procedure. They explored the important details that need to be included in each step to ensure instructions are clear, organised and easy for their audience to follow.

Maths:

Our Junior Room students have been developing their understanding of place value. They explored the different ways we can make and represent two-digit numbers, using hands-on materials such as bundles of ten and ones to help them see how numbers are made.

Students also used place value houses to identify the tens and ones in different numbers and practised explaining the value of each digit. They extended their counting skills by learning to count forwards and backwards in tens beyond 100, helping to build their number sense and confidence when working with larger numbers.
