Grade 5

Reading: 

This week students continued reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World, working through Chapters 10, 11, 12 and 13. They kept practising responding to what they read by evaluating the ideas and information in the text. Students engaged in pause points throughout the story, discussing character choices and the rising stakes of the plot. Wednesday's reading session was replaced by an excursion.

Writing: 

Students learned about sentence triples (the "rule of three") and how to use them to add emphasis and rhythm to their writing. They also explored pathetic fallacy, learning how to use weather and nature to reflect a character's feelings or the mood of a scene. Later in the week, students planned and wrote action and problem paragraphs for their own narratives, using figurative language to build tension. They continued developing their stories inspired by the class novel's themes and setting.

Maths:

Students explored units of measurement for capacity, learning how to compare and convert between millilitres, litres, kilolitres and megalitres. They practised estimating and measuring the capacity of everyday containers and compared their estimates to actual measurements for accuracy. Students also worked on solving real-world problems involving length, mass and capacity together. The week concluded with a measurement assessment to check their understanding of these skills.

Humanities:

Students explored the impacts of bushfires on people, communities and the environment. They watched videos to build understanding and completed a hands-on activity sorting fire danger rating by severity.

SEL: 

Students learned about the importance of asking for help clearly and being a supportive friend to others. They practised recognising when they need help and how to listen and support their peers.
