Maths 

This week in Maths, we have been learning to solve addition and subtraction problems using the UPSC strategy – Understand, Plan, Solve and Check.

Students have been developing their problem-solving skills by first working out what type of problem they are being asked to solve. We have been exploring three different problem types:

• Combine – putting two or more amounts together to find the total.
• Compare – finding the difference between two amounts.
• Change – working out what happens when an amount increases or decreases.

Students have been using clues in word problems to decide whether they need to add or subtract, before choosing an efficient strategy to solve the equation. They have also been checking their answers to make sure they are reasonable and make sense in the context of the problem.

We are becoming confident mathematicians who can explain our thinking, choose appropriate strategies and check our solutions! 

Spelling 

In Spelling, we have been continuing to develop our spelling skills through the MultiLit Spelling program. Students are building their understanding of spelling patterns, sounds and strategies to help them become more confident and accurate spellers.

We have also been learning about word origins and discovering where some of the words we use today originally came from. Students have been exploring how words can have roots in different languages and how understanding a word’s history can sometimes help us understand its meaning and spelling.

It has been wonderful to see students becoming curious about the words they use every day and making connections between language, meaning and spelling!
