Spring has sprung at Montmorency Primary — and our garden is growing!

With longer days, more sunshine and (just!) warmer temperatures, spring is the perfect time to get stuck into the garden. And that’s exactly what our Grade 1 and 2 students did this week!

On Wednesday, we headed behind the Discovery Centre for a big weeding mission, helping to clear as many weeds as possible before they have a chance to flower and spread their seeds.

Our Grade 1 students did an astounding job, carefully removing not just the leaves but the roots too — the best way to make sure those pesky weeds don’t come bouncing back! They also remembered to gently tap any excess soil from the roots back into the garden, helping to keep our precious soil where it belongs. 

Exciting Plans for Our Garden!

We also have some very exciting news to share. We have applied for a Banyule Environment Grant to help us transform the area behind the Discovery Centre into a wonderful re-wilded zone.

Our vision includes native pollinator nesting columns, beautiful natural spaces and a yarning circle with seating — creating a special place for students to connect with nature while learning about First Nations perspectives and caring for Country.

A huge thank you to the wonderful parents who helped bring this grant application together, including Emma Powell, Megan Baulch and Renae Holmes. Writing a grant is no small effort, and we are incredibly grateful for all the time, ideas and enthusiasm that went into it.

Now, we have our fingers crossed!

We’ll keep you posted on the outcome — and in the meantime, there’s plenty more growing, digging, planting and discovering to do in our garden!
