Dear families,
Welcome to our first newsletter for the last term of the year. Here, you'll find some reflections on camp, curriculum work, and important dates.
Our camp to Sovereign Hill was an excellent start to term 4! The students were able to experience life during the gold rush and discover what life was like in the 1850s. The students enjoyed participating in a range of activities, such as gold panning, candle dipping, confectionary demonstrations, mine tours, and educational sessions! At night we were taken around the museum for an Aura sound and light show, and also got to watch a Pantomime show where students were able to experience going to the theatre in the 1850s.
In Reading this term, we have been exploring The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. As we read, students have been exploring character traits and motivations, identifying key messages, and understanding symbolism. Throughout the text we have been able to explore medieval times and understand what life was like during this period, including the features of castles, dungeons and the different roles people played in medieval society.
In Writing, students have been building on their narrative writing skills. We have been breaking down the different parts of a narrative, focusing on creating interesting characters and writing detailed setting descriptions to help bring their stories to life. Students are using descriptive language and their imaginations to make their stories more engaging for their readers.
In Maths, students have been developing their multiplication skills by learning how to solve larger multiplication problems using the vertical algorithm. We have been using place value to help us work accurately and practicing becoming more fluent with out times tables. After having so many students master their 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication skills, they were able to successfully move on to 2 by 2-digit equations and even larger ones as well. Students have been practicing applying their understanding to different worded problems. By understanding that multiplcation and division are fact families, students are now able to solve short division problems using the vinculum.
This term in Discovery, we have started exploring the big idea of 'A Life on Our Planet', with a focus on Biological Sciences and the world of living things! Students have been learning about the characteristics of living and non living things and investigating the life cycles of plants and animals. We have begun a hands-on investigation by sprouting mung beans in mini green houses and we look forward to observing the stages of plant growth.
In our Wellbeing lessons, students have been exploring the important topics of persistence, friendship building and inclusion. It has been important for us to discuss and show students how to persevere when faced with challenges, both inside and outside of the classroom. As friendships often change, we have also taught the importance of developing positive friendships through kindness, respect and communication, and ensuring everyone feels welcomed, valued and included. Through engaging discussions and activities, students have been encouraged to reflect on how their words and actions can make a positive difference to others and help create a safe, supportive and inclusive classroom community.
Students in 3/4 have been practising their T-ball skills for their competition between grades. So far, we've played one round in this 5 week season. Well done to the winning teams for the first round, and to all students who have participated well.
