BEANSTACK READING PLATFORM

Parents might recall our piece earlier in the year on the school’s adoption of the Beanstack Reading Platform (if you would like to revisit same, please find it here). Since it was introduced, 161,000 minutes of reading have been logged by students. For the month of June, the following students took out the Top 5 of the Leaderboard.

1. Partho G (7 White): 1642 minutes

2. Emanuela X (8 Orange): 1287 minutes

3. Lara T (7 Silver): 1153 minutes

4. Harper M (7 Indigo): 1136 minutes

5. Zara P (7 Purple): 900 minutes

    

Number 1 on the Class Leaderboard was 7 Purple, having read for an incredible 6,528 minutes! Congratulations to the abovementioned students, and those in 7 Purple!

Reading is a critical skill, and parents are encouraged to promote to their children reading at home and outside school. Per Australia Reads (please refer link for reference list and full text articles and abstract), “reading is four times more influential on intellectual progress in teens than having a parent with a degree”. Further, “exposure to larger home libraries in adolescence has a positive direct effect on adult literacy, numeracy, and information and communications technology skills”. The benefits of reading are therefore lifelong!

LIBRARY EVENTS

Harry Potter events at Pamela Coyne Library and St Stephen Gaudete Library 

Teacher Librarian Mrs Leonie Johnson created an incredible Harry Potter display at Pamela Coyne Library – an image of which you can see below! Further, a Harry Potter Trivia Quiz competition that ran at both the abovementioned campus libraries proved hugely popular, with Gracelle Gabila from 7 Bronze the eventual winner. Congratulations Gracelle!

Visit from Glowrey Primary School Grade 5 students

Towards the end of Term 2, two classes of Grade 5 students visited Pamela Coyne Library, to afford them an experience of a secondary school library. During their visits, they undertook the Harry Potter Trivia Quiz, much to their delight – with the winners of same presented with soccer balls as prizes. Having come from a wonderful library at their own school, students thoroughly enjoyed wandering the shelves at PCL and seeing how the library there operates. The students very much appreciated Mrs Johnson’s Harry Potter display, and thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

HORIZONS Students Runner Display in the Pamela Coyne Library

An eye-catching display based on the Year 7 English text Runner, by Robert Newton, was assembled by the HORIZONS students of the Dalton Road Campus. Below is an image of the display – gratitude goes to the students for their efforts to bring together a remarkable exhibit for the Pamela Coyne Library!
