Positive Student Behaviour and Engagement
As we begin Semester 2, it is the perfect opportunity to reset expectations and establish the positive routines that create the best possible learning environment for every student.
Clear, consistent expectations are the foundation of a successful classroom. They provide students with clarity about what is expected, create a safe and respectful environment, minimise disruptions to learning, and build trust through fairness and consistency. Most importantly, they help students develop the self-discipline, responsibility and resilience needed to become confident learners and positive contributors to our community.
Positive behaviour is fostered through strong relationships, explicit teaching of expectations and behaviours, and the consistent acknowledgement of students who make positive choices. When students know what success looks like and receive regular encouragement and recognition, they are more likely to demonstrate behaviours that support both their own learning and the learning of others.
At St Monica's College, we believe that high expectations and genuine care go hand in hand. Our Behaviour and Engagement Framework encourage students to reflect on their choices, accept responsibility for their actions, and develop strategies to manage challenges respectfully and confidently. By maintaining consistent routines and responding with fairness, empathy and understanding, we create classrooms where every student feels supported to succeed.
Parents and carers play an important role in this partnership. By reinforcing the College's expectations at home and encouraging respectful decision-making, families help students present the best version of themselves, particularly when faced with challenges. While students may occasionally feel that expectations are demanding, these structures exist to ensure every young person can learn in a safe, calm and inclusive environment.
Student growth extends beyond academic achievement. School reports, conversations with Year Level Leaders and ongoing communication with teachers provide valuable opportunities to celebrate progress, identify areas for growth and set meaningful goals. We encourage students and families to view learning not simply as achieving grades, but as developing the knowledge, character and skills that will prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
Together, by promoting positive behaviour, maintaining high expectations and strengthening respectful relationships, we can ensure Semester 2 is a rewarding and successful experience for every member of the St Monica's College community.
