Our students have a wide range of books to choose for their reading. The humour section is very popular where students can read books by authors such as Anh Do who is one of Australia’s best-loved storytellers. Anh Doh’s life story is a tale of family survival and finding your place in the world. It is incredible to think that Anh’s family were refugees from war torn Vietnam in 1980 when he was just a boy. The family escaped Vietnam in a small leaky fishing boat with many perils during the journey. Arriving in Australia the Do’s had to face many hardships such as poverty and racism as they tried to build a new life. Despite all the hardships Anh Do has been able to use his Catholic education and broad outlook on life to weave humour into many of his stories. Anh’s autobiography ‘The Happiest Refugee’ is about his many struggles as well as the love, laughter and resilience he has used to find his place as a successful writer.
