Year 5/6 Excursion to the Yakult Factory and Dandenong Market

On Tuesday 4th August, the Year 5/6 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Yakult Factory and Dandenong Market as part of this term's Inquiry unit exploring markets. Students were divided into five groups, with two groups beginning their day at the Yakult Factory while the remaining three groups explored Dandenong Market. After their first visit, the groups swapped locations, ensuring every student had the opportunity to experience both fantastic destinations.

At the Yakult Factory, students participated in a guided tour across the factory's two levels, where they learned about the fascinating history of Yakult, how the product is manufactured, and the journey it takes from production to consumers. Students were excited to watch the factory machines operating in real time and gain an understanding of the technology involved in large-scale manufacturing. They also viewed an educational presentation about the health benefits of Yakult before taking part in a creative marketing activity, where they designed their own Yakult advertisements and invented exciting new flavours. This hands-on experience gave students valuable insight into product development, branding, and marketing skills that will support them as they prepare for our Inquiry Market Day later this term.

At Dandenong Market, students explored the many vibrant sections of one of Melbourne's most iconic markets. They wandered through the fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, sampled seasonal produce, browsed clothing, toys, gifts and merchandise, and admired the incredible range of multicultural food vendors offering delicious treats from around the world. Armed with clipboards, students carefully observed and recorded what they could see, hear and experience, noting how stallholders displayed their products, attracted customers, and created engaging shopping experiences. Many students also enjoyed purchasing a special treat while immersing themselves in the lively atmosphere of the market.

The excursion provided an authentic opportunity for students to connect their learning with real-world experiences. They returned with plenty of ideas and inspiration for our upcoming Market Day, where they will work collaboratively to design, create, market and sell their own products.
