Year 1 Phonics Check

This week, our Year 1 students will begin participating in the Year 1 Phonics Check. This is a short, individual assessment that helps teachers understand how well students are developing their phonics skills—specifically their ability to decode (sound out) words.

The check consists of students reading a list of both real and made-up words. These made-up words are an important part of the assessment, as they allow teachers to see how effectively students can apply their phonics knowledge, rather than relying on memory or familiarity with known words.

The Phonics Check is not a test that students can 'study' for, nor is it something that should cause concern. It is designed to provide valuable information to teachers about each child’s reading development, helping us to tailor teaching and support to meet individual learning needs.

Students who are currently in Year 2 may also participate in the Phonics Check if they did not meet the expected benchmark during last year’s assessment. This provides an opportunity to monitor progress and ensure that any additional support required continues to be provided.

We are proud of the effort our students put into their learning every day and look forward to celebrating their progress in developing strong early reading skills.
