A Visit From the Australian Federal Police

 Staying safe Online and Offline.

Our Grade ½ students recently enjoyed a special visit from members of the Australian Federal Police. The students participated in an engaging and informative session about friendships, personal safety and staying safe online.. They explored the difference between a real life friend and an online friend and discussed why we need to be careful when communicating with people we do not know online.

Students also learnt what personal information is including details such as their full name , address and phone number and passwords and why it is important to keep these details private.

An important part of the lesson was learning what to do if someone online is trying to talk to you. Students were encouraged to tell a trusted adult and ask for help. It was a great opportunity for our students to develop their understanding of personal safety and make positive choices when interacting with others. We thank the Australian Federal Police for visiting our school and helping our students build their knowledge and confidence they need to stay safe.

Bookweek

The Grade ½ students had a wonderful time celebrating Book Week. Our celebrations began with a fantastic Book Week parade where students and teachers proudly dressed up as their favourite book characters. It was wonderful to see the creativity and excitement as everyone shared their love of books and reading.Thanks to all the parents and carers for supporting our Book Week parade.

Literacy

The students have continued to develop their literacy skills through some wonderful stories and are learning to look closely at how authors and illustrations share their messages. While reading ‘How to Mend A Broken Wing’ written by Bob Graham students explored how illustrations can convey the author’s message and add meaning to the story. We also investigated  how the use of color in illustrations can help show the mood and feeling of characters throughout the story.,  We have also been enjoying Fantastic Mr. Fox  written by Roald Dahl and have been exploring the different character traits shown by the characters.

Maths

From weeks 4-8 students explored multiplication and division concepts. They developed their understanding using a range of strategies to solve problems, including sharing, arrays, skip counting, numberlines, bar models and vertical algorithm

Discovery

With our discovery lessons this term, we explored the history of how schooling, toys and clothing have transformed over the decades. Students looked at how toys have shifted from handmade ones to those that provided more virtual experiences.

With a preview into the toys of the Victorian era, the children had an opportunity to create their own historical toy of choice including the Thaumatrope, Buzz Saw or The Cup and Ball game.

We were also privileged to have an incursion from ‘ The History box’  with hands-on workshops providing pupils to probe toys, fashion, gadgets, music and games from the past.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Our grade 1/2 students enjoyed an engaging incursion focused on responsible pet ownership. They learnt how to interact with dogs in a calm, safe and respectful manner including recognising when a dog may not want to be approached. It was a fun and valuable experience that helped students develop important skills for staying safe around animals.
