Learning Adventures in 1/2!

Powerful Place Value in Action!

Maths time in 1/2 has been full of bundling, building and brilliant thinking! We have launched into our Place Value unit and will be exploring it for the next three weeks. Students are learning how numbers are made using hundreds, tens and ones, and how to build, represent and explain numbers in different ways.

We’ve been using bundling sticks to make groups of ten, tens frames to help us see numbers clearly, MAB blocks to build bigger numbers, and number lines to count forwards and backwards. There have also been lots of hands-on games to help us practise our skills while having fun! It has been wonderful to see students confidently explaining their thinking and working together as mathematicians.

Exploring Stories with Elmer!

Our classroom has been filled with colour and creativity during our text study of Elmer’s Special Day! Students have been learning about important narrative features such as the beginning, middle and end, the plot, and key events in a story.

We have enjoyed retelling the story, discussing Elmer’s problem and solution, and thinking about what makes a story interesting. Students wrote sentences about different parts of the book and drew detailed pictures to match their writing. It has been fantastic to see their imagination and storytelling skills shine!
