Student AchievementsIntermediate Girls WMR BadmintonIn the days leading up to the competition we continued to work hard and our efforts paid off with yet another successful outcome. On the 31st of July, the intermediate girls badminton team participated in the Western Metropolitan Region competition in Altona.Whilst afraid of the mighty sports school ‘Maribyrnong’ we managed to defeat them and won all our games. The day followed on with wins one after the other, until it was time for the finals where we were up against St Albans. We faced our opponents with confidence, however we lost 2 single matches and won the other 2. This meant that it was down to our doubles, we were nervous and fearful but continued to trust in our abilities. Through our determination we won both doubles matches and are now preparing for states. Wish us luck! Joys Chui (K3) Intermediate Boys BadmintonIt was a cold Wednesday morning, and the Intermediate Boys Badminton team geared up in order to face their biggest threat yet; The regional competition. On that day, we knew we had a single enemy that frankly would be nearly impossible to beat; Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Featuring state players and athletes that have probably trained their entire lives for this sport, we had no choice but to try our best, and pray for a miracle. Sadly, we lost to them, unable to make up for the massive gap in skill, and unfortunately only secured third place, as not only was our morale lowered, but we also played another extremely strong team. Overall, I believe our team did well, and hopefully we get another chance next year to play again. Eric Yang (R9) 2024 Parliament Prize Competition Congratulations to Trisha Vinesh Vijayan for receiving a Highly Commended Certificate (top 10%) in this years Parliament Prize Competition. Each year, the Parliament of Victoria asks students across the state, from Grade 5 to Year 12, to share what you would say to parliament if you were an MP. This is a chance to talk about the issues that are important to you and your community. Competition entrants were required to submit a short video no more than 90 seconds long, demonstrating:A clearly articulated messageInteresting insights, ideas and/or perspectivesA clear understanding of why this issue or idea is important Monash Scolars Program After a competitive application process, we are pleased to announce that the following year 10 students have been accepted into the 2024-2046 Monash Scholar's Cohort; Adiba Khan, Aaron Bhimta, Joel Attokkaran, Gurleen Jhajj and Nasim Aliye. The Monash Scholars program is a prestigious program for high achieving secondary school students to give them a unique head start into university life. The program has been running for 11 years. Students who are selected to join the program in Year 10, stay until the end of Year 12. Over 2.5 years, Scholars participate in a range of bespoke activities to enhance their learning; explore their career ambitions; define their personal aspirations; and build networks with other high-achieving students. In their application, students needed to demonstrate acadewmic achievment, extra-curricular endeavours and articulate what a good leader looks like and how they display these qualities in their own lives. Congratulations to all recipients. Wyndham Division Intermediate Boys Hockey The Inter-school boys hockey team competed in the divisionals on July 22nd. We won 8-0 against the Manor Lakes team with Sachiv and Jay scoring hat tricks and Mitchell and Gowtham also scoring goals. Lachy M was the standout player who seemed to be everywhere throughout the game. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication put in through training two times a week for months beforehand. The team showed great skill, perseverance, and sportsmanship on field, and this milestone is a testament to its collective efforts.Thanks to Ms Fenby for coaching the team and Riley for helping coach on the day.Next stop is Regionals in Term 4. Mitchell P., R3, Hockey Captain Western Metropolitan Regional Senior Hockey Finals Our senior boys hockey team had blitzed through divisionals to reach the regional finals in Geelong on July 31st. It was a very warm day, the students had to play four full matches and the competition was fierce, with a rough Footscray team, a practised Geelong team and the hockey powerhouses of Maribyrnong and Strathmore. The students came away with a draw and three very close losses. Strathmore, which contained many club players, was rather shellshocked to be only able to score one goal against the SCHS defence and for the SCHS team to be constantly on the attack in the circle. Our incredible goalie, Devesh, elicited praise and awe from all of the other teams; the umpires could not believe that he was not a regular club player. In particular, the team’s penalty corner defence was outstanding, with the opposition’s set corner plays not able to get through and score. At one point first runner Nubaid blocked a lifted corner hit from barely a metre away. Well done to our formidable full backs, Tej and Nubaid, who worked and communicated beautifully together, our speedy half-backs Suhaan, Adi, Rama and Aksh, who covered considerable ground, Abhijit who controlled the game superbly from centre half, our wings Vinh and Om, who positioned perfectly in the pockets and on the posts, our skilful inners Martin and Mahin and our great captain Srikar who played almost all the minutes of each game at centre forward. A huge thank you to Dhyey, Jayesh and Ramika who filled in for us at the last minute and covered a number of positions on the field, allowing players to take a break. Ramika did an awesome job taking over as goalie for the Geelong game. Our boys received a special shout-out and thank you from the umpiring team and organisers at the tournament. Each of the umpires was impressed by their sportsmanship, their respect for the umpires and opposing players, their behavior and how hard they worked on the field. Many of the umpires expressed a quiet wish that SCHS had won and revealed they were hoping the team would do well each game! At the end of the day, the convener came over to express her pleasure at having such a lovely team at the tournament and to thank the boys for displaying such exemplary behavior - and to compliment Devesh’s goalkeeping! I am so proud of this team, and rather emotional that it was my last chance to work with the Year 12 boys, many of whom I have coached on my baseball and hockey teams for four years.
